Fix those car dents yourself and save your hard-earned money instead of paying big bucks to your neighborhood auto-repairman. With some elbow grease and easy-to-find tools, you don’t have to be a car expert to repair your car’s minor scratches and dents. Here are five DIY ways to help you restore your car's appearance without ruining the paint.
Most people use a plunger for all kinds of dents. You can try the plunger for your sink that looks like a cup or buy a special plunger that works on dents. You can start improving your car’s dents by putting hot water on the surface of the car where the dent is and pulling it with a plunger until it goes back to normal.
Best for bumpers made of plastic. Pour boiling water onto dent. Reach under the bumper and push out the dent with your hands. Since the heat won't last very long, you'll have to work quickly. If the dent doesn't completely go out, keep dumping boiling water on it until you're finished.
3. Mallet or Metal-work hammer:
Suitable for small or uneven dents on steel parts that you can easily access at the back. Use the mallet or hammer wrapped with cloth or padded with tape so the metal won’t be damaged. Tap the metal gently back into place. Make sure you’re not pushing the metal out of shape.
4. Hair Dryer and Compressed Air:
Heat the dent with the hair-dryer at its highest temperature, to expand the plastic. As soon as it's hot enough, grab the can of compressed air and begin spraying that area. The cold air will cause the plastic to contract, making the dent pop out.
5. Sand-paper and glazing putty:
(For shallow scratches with some chipped off paint, clean the scratch and then very carefully sand it with 2000-grit wet sandpaper (available in automotive supply stores). Let dry. Apply glazing putty. (Follow package instructions.) Smooth with sandpaper. Apply primer and paint.
As a general rule, the bigger the dent or scratch, the more time and specialized tools are needed to fix it. For major repairs beyond your skills, consult a reputable auto repair-man and have the costs estimated.
No matter how careful we are with our cars, other people are not as mindful of others’ properties. It could be a minor ding caused by another driver getting out of a tight parking spot, a runaway shopping cart, or an accident caused by a distracted driver.
