A stolen laptop or a dorm fire is a reality on a college campus. Since your student will be brining some pretty expensive stuff with them — a television, laptop, and smartphone for starters — it’s a good idea to make sure their belongings are protected. The coverage they need depends on whether they are living in the dorm or an off-campus apartment.
If your college student is living in a dorm, their belongings may be covered under your homeowners or renters insurance policy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says that students who are younger than 26 and living on campus may be covered through their parents’ policy. If your student will be living in an off-campus apartment or house, your coverage will probably not cover their belongings. A renters policy also provides liability coverage to protect you and your student from paying if found legally responsible for someone else’s injuries or accidental damage to their property.
