Having headlights that are not aimed properly can cause a lot of trouble for both the driver and other motorists. In fact, you will often see approaching vehicles flashing you with their lights because you are blinding them with yours. Collisions and time can cause headlights to shift and become misaligned. If you only see a short stretch of the road ahead, your headlights might be askew.
Although lights are essential parts of your vehicle, not a lot of people have them checked regularly. Here are some ideas on how you can ensure that your headlights are in place.
How Do I Check?
Before doing this, make sure that you check your vehicle’s headlight specifications. If you are not sure about your vehicle’s headlight specifications, you can go to a repair shop to ask them to check.
You can test your headlights by parking it on a leveled surface where there is a wall at least 25 feet away. Keep in mind that different vehicles require different distances. Shine your lights on the wall and check the position of your lights. Most vehicles have the lights on the passenger side a bit higher than the driver’s side.
Another method to check if your lights are aimed properly is to pull it close to a wall and mark the position by a marker or a masking tape. After doing so, back up your vehicle up to at least 25 feet and check if the lights still hit the same spots.
How Can I Adjust the Headlights?
Depending on the make or type of your vehicle, there are different ways as to how you can adjust them. Most vehicles have a screw or a bolt that is used to adjust the height and horizontal aim of your headlights. A bubble level is provided on some vehicles to make it easier for adjustments.
The space on your engine bay also depends on the type and brand of the car. There are models where you need to take out the battery to reach the screws. Remember that to get an accurate reading, you must make sure to be on a leveled surface and your vehicle’s suspension should be in good condition. The wall that you are going to use needs to also be perpendicular to the wall.
Car maintenance is best for your protection on the road, but a car insurance is also important to protect you from situations beyond your control.
